The Right Handbag for You + Rue La La Handbag Style Guide

When it comes to handbags, do you like to carry everything or the bare necessities? For me, I tend to gravitate towards a tote bag (evidence here and here) because I love having everything I need in one bag. Let’s just say having a hairbrush or Tide To Go comes in handy. But there are times when all I need is a bag to hold lip gloss, cash and my ID.

Below are some handbags that I’m currently coveting, including totes and mini bags or cross body bags. Click to below the photos to shop!

I have the Longchamp bag above in a different color that I use for school and every day. It’s great. The Madewell tote includes free monogramming. How awesome is that?! And that black Target tote reminds me of Kate Spade, and it’s a fraction of the price!

I use the Lilly Pulitzer phone case when I go out and don’t want to carry a bag. I’m loving black for a mini bag because it goes with anything and everything.

When it comes to shopping for a handbag, here are my tips:

  1. Functionality. Have an idea in mind of what kind of bag you’re looking for. Do you need an everything bag or just the necessities? Try to stick to what you’re shopping for.
  2. Color. If you’re starting a handbag collection, I’d suggest getting your basics covered. Brown to go with everything. Black for day or night. Once you have your basics, then you can buy that special bag that will be used less often.
  3. Price. If you want a bag that you’ll use for years, you’ll probably have to pay more for one. Wait until there is a sale so you can save on investment pieces or designer bags. Keep in mind that there are plenty of budget-friendly items out there that look expensive, so if you’re not ready to break the bank just yet, you can still be stylish.

Rue La La’s Handbag Style Guide has great information to help make your handbag shopping experience even better. I personally love the tips for determining a handbag’s authenticity and for taking care of your handbag. This guide has everything you need to know.

I love all of these – too bad I'm not in need of any more new purses right now.

I've had my Longchamp bag for over 20 years. I joke and say that I'll put it in my will and leave it to someone. It's an iconic and simple style which translates well year after year. GREAT choices!
