Entering the work world can be intimidating when you’re a young professional. You’re surrounded by experienced people who have established careers. It’s intimidating.
After graduation this past spring, I entered the working world a week later. It was scary. I wanted to impress everyone, and I wanted to feel like I belonged. But all of this takes time, and the transition from student to professional doesn’t happen over night. In the five or so months that I’ve been working, there are some things I’ve learned along the way.
1. Become friends with your coworkers.
Establishing relationships outside of the office is really important for your cowering relationships in the office. Find commonalities or shared interests with your new coworkers, and go from there. Go to lunch or grab a coffee together during the work day. Go to happy hour every now and then. No one says that you have to be bests, but all of this will make your work that much better.
2. Read every day.
Stay up to date on what’s going on in your industry. The easiest way to do this is to subscribe to industry-related publications. Each morning when I get to the office, I read articles from from my favorite digital marketing publications, like Digiday and Ad Age. You can also set up Google Alerts, so you’ll be updated with important news.
3. Be willing to learn and grow.
You’ve got the job, but that’s just the beginning. Always be looking to learn. Ask questions and get advice from your coworkers and supervisors. Seek opportunities to grow in your professional career. You’re willingness to learn will pay off and help you make strides in your career.
4. It’s okay to make mistakes.
It’s how you learn. As a young professional, you’re not going to know everything. The key is to learn from your mistakes and move on.
5. There will be frustrating days.
You’ll have good days, and you’ll definitely have bad days. Don’t dwell on them. You have to separate work and life on those really bad days. Go home, relax, and come back to the office the following day with a fresh mind and a new perspective.
